Ottoman Immigration to the Americas and My Roots. « Mental Notes from a Feisty Turkish Girl: "Diasporas and Mistaken Identities
The Irish Diaspora today in the United States outnumbers that of Irishmen and women on the island due to steady migration across the Atlantic. According to Milton L. Barron’s study Intermediacy: Conceptualization of Irish Status in America, the fractured representation of the Irish, convinced some to begin calling themselves Scottish. This, in my opinion, could have caused incorrect calculations of Irish blooded Americans, just as was the case for the Ottoman Americans.
Along with fighting the status hierarchy, the Irish also had to fight for their own religious identity: Catholicism. North America saw itself as largely protestant, from the eyes of the founding fathers. If Christians themselves encountered a glass ceiling in relation to their religious identity, imagine the Jews or Muslims that saw America as their only hope for freedom."
